Mobile app success metrics: from installs to retention

A mobile app's success isn't just the number of downloads. This article covers the key metrics that show the real state of a product: from activation to user retention.

Метрики успіху мобільних додатків: від встановлень до ретеншену

The number of downloads isn't an indicator. What really speaks to success?

Imagine you launched a mobile app. In the first week — 10,000 installs. You celebrate. And two weeks later only… 300 active users remain.

Sound familiar? Then what you need isn't quantity but quality success metrics.

The reality is: an install is only the beginning. The real challenge is to retain the user and make them active and loyal. Without that, any marketing budget drains into nowhere.

In this article you'll learn:

  • which indicators show the app's real effectiveness;
  • how to calculate them correctly;
  • what to optimize first.

Why it's important to track metrics at every stage

A mobile app isn't a website where a user drops in and leaves. Here the life cycle matters: from the first touch to regular use.

If you measure only downloads, you see only the tip of the iceberg.

Success should be evaluated step by step:

  • How many users installed it?
  • How many of them opened the app?
  • How many registered or took a first action?
  • How many came back the next day, after a week, after a month?

Key success metrics for mobile apps

📥 Installs

What it shows: How many people downloaded the app.
What it doesn't show: How satisfied or active they are.

Useful as a starting point but not a success KPI.

📊 Activation (Activation Rate)

What is "activation"? It's when a user first gets value from the app:

  • registered;
  • made a first purchase;
  • created a profile;
  • filled in the initial information.

How to calculate:
Activation = (Number of activated users / Number of installs) × 100%

Low activation = something is wrong with the first screen or the onboarding logic.

🔁 Retention (Retention Rate)

What it shows: How many users come back after a certain period.

  • Day 1 Retention: did the user open the app the next day?
  • Day 7 / Day 30 Retention: did they come back after a week / a month?

Why it matters:
A user who hasn't returned within the first 3 days most likely won't return at all.

🔄 Cohort analysis

It's a way to see how different groups of users behave over time.
For example:

  • those who installed the app in January come back more often than in February;
  • after the onboarding redesign retention improved.

The cohort approach lets you see the dynamics, not just dry numbers.

💸 Lifetime Value (LTV)

What it shows: How much, on average, one user brings over the whole time of interacting with the app.

Why it matters:
Knowing LTV, you understand how much you can spend on acquiring one user and still stay profitable.

🧲 CPA / CPI (acquisition cost)

  • CPA (Cost per Action): how much it costs to get one user who performs the desired action (registration, purchase, etc.).
  • CPI (Cost per Install): the cost of one app install.

If CPI is higher than LTV, you're "burning" budget.

💔 Churn Rate (user churn)

What it shows: How many users stopped using the app during a certain period.

High churn = poor UX, insufficient value or errors in the app.

⭐️ App Store Rating + Reviews

This is a metric too. And a very important one.

  • It affects visibility in the stores.
  • It builds new users' trust.
  • It gives real feedback about the user's pain points.

Which metrics matter specifically for you?

It depends on the product's goals.

If the app is e-commerce:

  • Retention → so people buy more than once
  • LTV → to calculate profitability
  • CPA → to scale advertising

If it's a meditation / educational product:

  • Retention → whether people really use it
  • Day 1/7 → whether the content "hooks" people
  • Churn → when and why people quit

If it's a helper app (for example, a tracker):

  • DAU / MAU → how regular the usage is
  • Onboarding → whether it's clear the first time

A practical example: how we improved retention by 41%

A client came to us with a mobile app for online workouts. The problem: many installs, but low activity after a few days.

What we did:

  • Reworked onboarding: showed value right away, without registration.
  • Added push reminders with useful content.
  • Personalized the home screen after login.

📈 Result:
Day 7 Retention grew from 18% to 25%,
Day 30 — from 6% to 11%.

How to start tracking metrics right now

  1. Define the "valuable action" in your app.
    It's the basis for all subsequent measurements.
  2. Install analytics.
    Firebase, Mixpanel, Amplitude — depends on your goals and budget.
  3. Build reports regularly.
    Not just "look once per release" but weekly — like a pulse.
  4. Analyze not only the "what" but also the "why".
    A metric is a symptom. We look for the causes in behavior.

Conclusion

A mobile app is a living product. You can't "build it and forget it".
To grow, you need to:

  • understand how the user behaves;
  • measure the effectiveness of each stage;
  • test hypotheses and optimize based on data.

Metrics are your navigation. Without them you steer the product by touch.
